“Divorce Day” –  Mediation can shift the focus to positive outcomes

The first Monday in January is often dubbed in the media as “Divorce Day”  –  the day where family solicitors receive the most enquiries.

Whilst January does tend to see an increase in enquiries, as people see the New Year as a chance for a new start, people should always be reminded that they can still deal with their separation in a way that keeps conflict to a minimum, and where children are involved, to think about their needs during such a difficult time.

Futures Family Mediation can help couples going through divorce or separation resolve their issues collectively by working to together to ensure better outcomes for themselves, and where applicable, their children.

The effects of divorce and separation on children can be hugely significant, and if not managed with care and sensitivity, can cause long-lasting emotional harm well into adulthood.

Futures Family Mediation works with couples on everything from how to start the process of divorce or separation, all the way through to helping them resolve the financial and child arrangements that follow.  We do this in a kind and sensitive way, understanding the emotions they are going through.

Couples can discuss how to reach a financial settlement, the arrangements for their children, or even how to co-parent, and how they would each like their co-parenting relationship to work.  A co-parenting relationship is vastly different to a romantic relationship.  It involves a whole different level of communication, trust and boundaries. Some parents can deal with this transition easily, others struggle and may need some help and guidance on how to co-parent. Futures Family Mediation can help with all of this.

Whilst the media may dub the first Monday in January as “Divorce Day”, our Accredited Family Mediator, Paul Richardson, feels more focus should be placed on obtaining positive outcomes during such a difficult time.  Paul says:

“Divorce and separation is such a traumatic time, both for the couples themselves, but also for everyone surrounding them – whether that be their children, or other significant others in their lives such as parents, close friends and other family members.  Understanding and acknowledging how difficult things are at this time is crucial to helping couples focus on trying to resolve things as amicably and as cost-effective as possible.  Mediation offers a safe place for couples to talk about the things that need to be dealt with and to make decisions collectively.  It helps keep costs down and means that couples are making decisions for themselves and their, and where applicable, their children’s futures.  Creating a better understanding of the process of separation, and shifting the focus towards positive outcomes is something that will help people come through such a traumatic period in their lives a little easier compared to costly legal battles.”

Futures Family Mediation can help with the following:

  1. Property and Finances upon divorce.
  2. Property issues for unmarried couples.
  3. Child arrangements and helping couples with co-parenting following separation.
  4. Child Inclusive Mediation – offering direct consultation with children to obtain their views and feelings.
